Nobody talks about it but we’ve all experienced it…you’ve just gotten out of the pool to find your hair left a tangled, matted mess. If you are a fan of switching up your hair color, you may be familiar with your hair feeling grainy, rough and dry instead of the desired hydrated, moisturized and healthy look. And what about the face wash that leaves your skin so tight you wonder if your face will ever return to normal again!

Welcome to the wonderful world of pH!

First, what is pH!?! pH is the acronym for “potential hydrogen” which is in turn very simply a measurement scale of acidity and alkalinity. Understanding this scale is the first step to healthy hair. With 7 being neutral, anything below 7 on the scale is considered acidic and everything above 7, alkaline. Our hair, skin and nails are all within the acid mantle, 4.5 – 5.5. To keep your hair in optimal condition, you’ve got to keep it within this range. While Saints & Sinners Haircare is proud to formulate within that acidic pH, most haircare products oddly consider pH an insignificant factor.

Over time, using products outside the proper pH can do long term damage. Repeatedly lifting the outer surface of the hair structure, called the cuticle, not only makes hair look and feel terrible but at a certain point your hair will pass the point of no return. On the reverse side of the equation, using products with the proper pH like Velvet Divine Moisture Shampoo and Velvet Divine Daily Conditioner will keep hair shiny and tangle free not to mention that keeping the cuticle closed will prolong the longevity of haircolor!

Another perfect example of the importance of pH would be as it relates to “no tears” baby shampoos. While using these products, babies eyes aren’t irritated but babies hair certainly doesn’t look or feel it’s best! And forget trying to detangle it! Why? These products are formulated not for the pH of the hair but for the pH of the eye – which lies between pH 7-8. Right there you know hair will not be soft, shiny and detangled. The goal of these products is to make bath time a breeze without irritating babies eyes, not to end up with fabulous hair! (side note…if you need a pH appropriate detangler, moms everywhere swear by our Velvet Divine Leave-In Conditioner!)

So pH, friend or foe? Well, both! Using haircare products outside the proper pH will result in all the hair woes and make you hair foes! Use products with the proper pH like Saints & Sinners and you and your tresses will be Bff’s for life!

Sinfully Good Styling!
